1990s: Evolution

The year 1997 was a turning point for OSU-COM. With the School of Biomedical Sciences established on campus, and plans for future graduate programs on the horizon, the institution was renamed OSU Center for Health Sciences with the College of Osteopathic Medicine under the OSU-CHS umbrella. OSU-COM also held its first White Coat Ceremony, the Center for Advanced Medical Education (C.A.M.E) opened and the atrium connecting the buildings on campus was named Founders Hall.

In 1993, the college successfully obtained a twenty-man U.S. Air Force hypobaric chamber, which simulates high altitude conditions. The apparatus provides a base for human and animal-based research in the Tulsa Aviation Alliance, a multi-institution Oklahoma research coalition. With treadmills, EKG’s, vision testing, respiratory and metabolic analyzers, the college’s students will be able to address related issues of pulmonary perfusion, psychomotor and cognitive abilities, and the effects of hypoxia.

Then medical student Kayse Shrum in the lab circa 1995. Shrum would later become president of OSU Center for Health Sciences and Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine before being names President the OSU system.
