Office of Academic Success

OSU Center for Health Sciences focuses on the success of its medical students, graduate students, physician assistant students, residents, and fellows by offering individualized counseling in career development, study strategies, academic skill development, and board preparation through the Office of Academic Success (OAS).


Academic Support

The OAS provides academic support through Learning Specialists who are trained in education and learning theory. Learning Specialists support medical students, graduate students, physician assistant students, residents, and fellows by:

  • Providing individualized academic counseling focused on study skills, information processing, time management, test-taking strategies, note-taking, test anxiety, stress management, and other academic success skills.
  • Facilitating exam reviews and exam autopsies.
  • Administering and interpreting learning inventories and assessments.
  • Developing individualized success plans and connecting students with appropriate academic resources to improve performance.
  • Conducting on-campus presentations and workshops.
  • Advocating for student success and academic achievement.
  • Supporting students experiencing academic difficulty through consistent guidance and resource development.

Career Development

The OAS provides career development support through Career Counselors who specialize in assisting medical students with residency preparation and the residency application process. Career Counselors support students by:

  • Offering advisement on ACGME residency placement opportunities.
  • Providing guidance and access for ERAS applications.
  • Assisting with the development and editing of CVs and personal statements.
  • Compiling, reviewing, and editing student information for Medical Student Performance Evaluations (MSPEs).
  • Providing access to and support for mock interview preparation through Big Interview.
  • Organizing career-focused student events, including the Residency Fair.
  • Providing access to Careers in Medicine resources and tokens.
  • Supporting students throughout the residency application and interview process, for the Match, Military Match, San Francisco Match, and Urology Match.

Supplemental Instruction Program

The Office of Academic Success oversees the Supplemental Instruction (SI) Program, which provides peer-led academic support designed to promote content mastery, active learning, and effective study strategies. Through SI Sessions, Exam Prep Sessions, Academic Tutoring, and Board Prep Sessions, students have access to a variety of resources to support their academic success throughout medical school.
