Maternal health


Get expert specialist knowledge in a virtual learning network in collaboration of the Oklahoma State Department of Health, The Perinatal Center, and the Oklahoma State University Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.


The curriculum is designed to expand expertise in best practice and evidence-based care of pregnancies in Oklahoma to assist family medicine and rural clinicians to provide better care for their patients in their medical home.

 

Who Should Join?

This ECHO line focuses on the realm of maternal health: prenatal, perinatal, and post-partum however welcomes anyone from anywhere with any credentials.

What does the Maternal Health ECHO Program offer?

  • Increase access to obstetric guidance throughout the state of Oklahoma
  • Provides education, training, and consultation to support the State Maternal Health Innovation Program
  • Real time clinical review of cases submitted by participants
  • Free CME for healthcare professionals *certain conditions apply

 

Why Maternal Health?

  • Nationally, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 700 women die every year related to pregnancy or from delivery complications.
  • Most maternal deaths happen before or soon after the mother has given birth, usually within a few weeks or months postpartum.
  • For the past 18 years in the state of Oklahoma, an average of 11 women died of complications related to pregnancy every year.
  • According to March of Dimes, 41 out of 77 counties in Oklahoma are classified as maternity care deserts with no birthing hospital and no obstetrician-gynecologist or certified nurse midwife to provide care.
