Training and Education
The Anesthesiology Medicine residency program features a formal curriculum that emphasizes the development of anesthesiology medicine competencies. Complex cardiac, vascular, obstetric and regional cases are assigned early and throughout our four-year program. A substantial portion of the resident's time is spent at the OSU Medical Center learning and working alongside fellow residents in other specialties and physicians that regularly provide feedback to best prepare you when interacting with patients, their families, faculty and clinic staff.
Each resident is afforded the opportunity to extend his or her knowledge and skills to various areas through electives. The residency program offers a well-rounded, quality training program in anesthesiology and is designed to prepare each resident for a successful career as an anesthesiologist.

The country's largest single site osteopathic hospital, OSU Medical Center, is located just blocks from the OSU Center for Health Sciences. Staff physicians have trained at some of the nation's most prestigious medical institutions and have a high regard for their personal role in postgraduate education. Internships and residency positions in many different disciplines are available. OSU Medical Center is significantly involved in clinical training for medical students, nurses, therapists and technicians from several area schools and colleges.

Saint Francis Hospital was founded by Mr. and Mrs. William K. Warren, Sr. in 1955 and opened its doors in 1960. The hospital originally consisted of a six-story building with 275 acute-care beds and 40 newborn beds.
Saint Francis Hospital, a 1,112-bed tertiary center, includes the region's only children's hospital and level IV neonatal intensive care unit, a 168-bed heart hospital and Tulsa's leading trauma and emergency center.
Rotation Schedule
PGY-1
We provide a unique opportunity each Wednesday for interns to spend the day in the OR where they are paired with another resident. There are also two dedicated rotations to Anesthesia during intern year. Also, once a week, interns will spend a half-day at the medical school in faculty directed research. Our research faculty have an extensive and proven track record for publishing in our specialty journals.
PGY-2
Our CA-1 residents spend the majority of the year in house. Two months are dedicated to Cardiothoracic Anesthesia and one month to Regional Pain. During this year our residents also get extensive experience with thoracic, vascular, general, plastic, orthopedic, and obstetric cases as well as regional blocks including interscalene, supraclavicular, axillary, PECS I and II, serratus anterior, erector spinae, paravertebral, TAP, quadratus lumborum, fascia iliaca, femoral, sciatic, saphenous, popliteal, iPACK, ankle, and more.
PGY-3
CA-2’s begin out rotations. 6 months will be spent out of house with Pediatric, OB and Critical Care rotations at the University of Oklahoma. Housing isprovided. OU provides the most diverse pediatric anesthesia experience in the state and has an affiliated Pediatric Anesthesia fellowship.
PGY-4
CA-3’s spend 4 months out of house for neurosurgery, trauma and chronic pain management with an additional 3 months of electives at any one of our affiliated sites. Our residents are well received and we have strong working agreements with each of our elective rotation sites. Graduates who wish to stay in Tulsa are most often offered positions with our affiliated sites.
Didactics & Conferences
Didactics
We have structured daily didactics directed towards preparation for passing of ABA boards. Topics are taken from the ABA Basic and Advanced topic outline. We also have regular Ultrasound and TEE workshops, book club, journal club and Morbidity and mMortality. Faculty are involved regularly and also provide scheduled written and oral board review. We also participate in grand rounds on a weekly basis which is for all residents and attending physicians at OSU.
Research
Intern year, time is dedicated each week to faculty directed research. Our department works closely with OSU faculty to work productively towards publication in our specialty journals.
Medical Student Clerkship
The Anesthesiology clerkship you will be working with an anesthesia resident in operating rooms and procedural suites throughout the OSU Medical Center to provide general anesthesia and monitored anesthesia care to a wide variety of patients. You will be an active participant in care and will have the opportunity to practice important life-saving skills.
The skills you will acquire during the basic clerkship in anesthesiology are broadly applicable to a wide variety of fields and are particularly useful in rapid response and code situations.
As a medical student on the Basic rotation, you are encouraged to be an active participant in your patients’ anesthesia care from start to finish—from conducting the preoperative evaluation prior to induction, to performing procedures during and after induction, to signing out to the PACU after emergence.
Anesthesia rotations are not just shadowing; you will be encouraged to get your hands dirty! You will receive teaching in the operating room from anesthesia residents and attendings who are engaged, active teachers and who view you as an integral member of the team. You will have the opportunity to learn about physiology and pharmacology in real-time.
