Why Hypertension Management in Primary Care?

  • Globally, it is estimated that more than 1 billion people have hypertension according to the World Health Organization.
  • Nearly half of adults in the United States have hypertension according to the CDC. A significant portion of individuals with hypertension may not be aware of their condition until it leads to complications.
  • Treatment rate for hypertension globally is 47% in women and 38% in men.  Less than half of those treated achieved adequate control.
  • Higher rates of hypertension have been noted in Black, Hispanic, Asian, and rural populations.
  • Individual patient care can be fragmented between multiple health care providers leading to inadequate screening, diagnosis, and treatment.

Sessions will address multiple topics including but not limited to:

  • Hypertension: Definition and Stages
  • Principles of hypertension therapeutics
  • Stepwise approach to hypertension
  • Hypertension and Diabetes
  • Hypertension and Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Secondary hypertension
  • Hypertension and older adults
  • Hypertension and pregnancy
  • Stress management & Lifestyle
  • Complications of hypertension drug therapy
  • Weight management in pediatrics
